Lee Newby - Set and Costume Designer for the play 'Swansea Boy'

Lee Newby is a set and costume designer who graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) in 2011, where he developed a strong foundation in theatre design. His career has since taken him across the globe, contributing to a wide range of productions including plays, musicals, dance, and circus performances.

He has had the opportunity to work with director Sean Mathias on several projects, beginning with Gently Down the Stream (Park Theatre, 2017). Their collaboration continued with A Prayer for Wings at Volcano Theatre in Swansea (2019), a co-production with Volcano and Swansea Grand Theatre marking the city’s 50th anniversary. Newby also designed the sets for Mathias’ inaugural summer season at Theatre Royal Windsor in 2021, including Hamlet and The Cherry Orchard, both featuring a repertory company led by Sir Ian McKellen.

Notable theatre credits include his West End debut with James Graham’s Olivier Award-winning comedy Labour of Love (Noël Coward Theatre, 2017); The Life I Lead (Wyndham’s Theatre, 2019), The Last Five Years (Garrick Theatre, 2022), The Enfield Haunting (Ambassadors Theatre, 2024), and the upcoming The Last Laugh (Noël Coward Theatre, 2025).
